Exploring the Digital Highways: How Reddit Facilitated Cannabis Conversations During COVID-19

A team of researchers including Dr. Laura Schwab Reese delved into the digital corridors of Reddit to understand how cannabis conversations evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analyzing 213 posts and 2,546 comments from the subreddit r/saplings across different pandemic phases, the study paints a picture of how social media platforms have become hubs for youth engagement with cannabis-related topics.

Quantitative analysis revealed a surge in activity on Reddit, highlighting its growing significance as a space for candid dialogue and community support amidst the pandemic’s uncertainty. In addition, qualitative insights from content analysis uncovered shifting priorities in discussions, from acquiring cannabis and usage tips at the pandemic’s onset to deeper explorations of consequences and tolerance over time.

While Reddit serves as a valuable platform for connection and exchange, the study also raises concerns about the prevalence of anecdotal information and potential misinformation. Many posters actively sought high-quality, evidence-based information, but most insights derived from personal experiences. Overall, there is pressing need for interventions that provide accurate, evidence-based information to empower informed decision-making and promote harm reduction strategies.
